In October 1945, the imminent resumption of football directed to the managerial designation of Matt Busby, who claimed an unprecedented grade of command over group assortment, contestant moves and teaching sessions. Busby directed the group to second-place association finishes in 1947, 1948 and 1949, and to FA Cup triumph in 1948. In 1952, the association won the First Division, its first association name for 41 years. With a mean age of 22, the newspapers marked the back-to-back name triumphant edge of 1956 "the Busby Babes", a testament to Busby's belief in his youth players. In 1957, Manchester United became the first English group to contend in the European Cup, regardless of objections from The Football League, who had refuted Chelsea the identical opening the preceding season. En path to the semi-final, which they lost to Real Madrid, the group noted a 10–0 triumph over Belgian champions Anderlecht, which continues the
Soccer Club's large-scale triumph on record.
