Busby years (1945–1969)

In acknowledgement of the team's tragedy, UEFA asked the association to contend in the 1958–59 European Cup beside eventual League champions Wolverhampton Wanderers. Despite acceptance from the FA, the Football League very resolute that association should not go in the affray as it had not qualified. Busby rebuilt the group through the 1960s by marking players for example Denis Law and Pat Crerand, who blended with the next lifetime of youth players – encompassing George Best – to win the FA Cup in 1963. The next time of the year, they completed second in the association, then won the name in 1965 and 1967. In 1968, Manchester United became the first English association to win the European Cup, drubbing Benfica 4–1 in the last with a group that comprised three European Footballers of the Year: Bobby Charlton, Denis Law and George Best.
